Trophy hunting is NOT conservation. New decisions at CoP20 affecting lions and leopards have been accepted. Whilst positive these still do not address the issues surrounding trophy hunting and fuelling demand for trade.

We now celebrate 83 wild-born calves who exist because we rescued their mothers years ago. Nasalot (seen here with baby Nala and Nusu), was one such elephant orphaned by tragedy, now raising her family in the wild. Watching wild herds approach our orphan units reminds us why this work matters. These elephants know Umani Reintegration Unit is a safe haven. They bring their calves, browse peacefully nearby, and sometimes mingle with our orphans – a beautiful testament to the trust we've built in this landscape.

I had a horrific panic attack today. One of the worst in months or maybe even years. I thought I’d like to just explain what it feels like to normalize it for everybody else out there who suffers for anxiety, depression or similar.

Be kind to each other

Orphans who have overcome the greatest trauma grow into the most nurturing elephants. Lualeni was no exception; she took younger orphans under her wing and, when she went wild in Tsavo, became renowned for ‘kidnapping’ the orphans! This year Lualeni introduced us to her third child, Luki (here)!

They are peaceful, female-led and use sex in everyday interactions. Now a new conservation scheme could offer a lifeline to our critically endangered close relatives living on the Congo river

It was a challenging operation: Over the course of five hours, we slowly shepherded the bulls 15 kilometres across heavily populated areas, winding through farms, schools, and homesteads. Patience and persistence paid off — both elephants made it safely back to the National Park.
