The joint exercise also indicates that the People’s Liberation Army Navy primarily uses the Liaoning as a testbed to develop doctrine and equipment for carrier operations.

The Fujian sailed to Huangdao Naval Base to likely conduct a joint sea exercise with the Liaoning in the Yellow Sea. The exercise would develop the doctrine necessary for Fujian to conduct dual carrier operations with Shandong, Liaoning, and other carriers in the future.

The Fujian conducted limited flight operations when the ship was north of Shanghai on December 17th, with at least one J-15T aircraft seen approaching the carrier to land.

The carrier left the base sometime in the afternoon and proceeded to sail into the South China Sea, where it will conduct flight operations alongside the other ships that make up its carrier group.

This process is also reflected by the PLANMC’s planned introduction of new variants of the Type 05 vehicle, such as the 120mm mortar howitzer and HQ-13 SAM system.

The PCL-181 shows how the PLANMC will embark on modernization processes to enhance its brigades’ ability to conduct operations and be more combat effective.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The SPH will also enable the PLANMC to consolidate its maintenance requirements by reducing the number of artillery systems it uses from two to one.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
Additionally, the PCL-181 will enhance the PLANMC’s logistical and maintenance supply chains by consolidating the number of artillery rounds that brigades would need to conduct operations.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The PCL-181 would also enable the Marine Brigades to provide more destructive indirect fire support at longer ranges compared to the PL-66 or the PLZ-07B.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The landing site’s limited space means that the PLANMC cannot deploy multiple types of artillery to the locations without the risk of them being destroyed by enemy fire or delaying breakout operations.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
For instance, the PLZ-07B’s 122mm rounds would be inadequate in destroying fortifications and other defensive positions during beach landings. Despite its 152mm caliber, the PL-66's need for towing renders it unsuitable for destroying fortified positions.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The PLANMC began to transition to the PCL-181 in 2022 because of the advantages it would provide compared to the PL-66 and PLZ-07B.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The PCL-181 SPH will significantly improve the PLANMC’s fire support capability while consolidating both its logistical and maintenance supply chains. Furthermore, the PCL-181 demonstrates the PLANMC’s ability to modernize its brigades to enable the units to be more combat effective.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The PCL-181 has a fire control system that can receive data from Fire Direction Centers to calculate firing solutions for missions.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The PCL-181 has a range of between 17 miles and 45 miles (27 and 72 kilometers) depending on the type of round used. The SPH has a continuous rate of fire of 6–8 rounds per minute and uses both guided and unguided rounds.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The SPH has a six-man crew who can operate the howitzer in its automatic, semi-automatic, or manual modes. There are 30 ammunition tubes located on each side of the middle of the PCL-181 that can carry shells and propellant charges for use.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The PCL-181 is an SPH that has a PLL-01 155mm howitzer directly mounted and integrated on a 6x6 truck designed by the Hubei Sanjiang Aerospace Wanshan Special Vehicle Co., Ltd.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The battalion used the PCL-181 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) during the exercise. The PCL-181 indicates that the brigade completed the transition from the PL-66 152mm towed howitzers and PLZ-07B 122mm tracked SPH.
December 14, 2025 at 2:58 AM
The exercise tested the battalion’s coordinated combat capabilities to operate as part of a larger multi-branch joint operation. Additionally, the exercise sought to improve the battalion’s combat effectiveness in conducting operations in complex electromagnetic environments.

Alternatively, the small and medium landing craft can be used to move equipment to staging areas that the PLA would use in a Taiwan invasion. The landing craft would also allow for the rapid movement of PLA units to staging areas using the rivers that are near the unit’s bases.

For example, veterans who previously served on Type 271IIIAs and other landing craft can be recalled to crew RoRo ships as well as other vessels that would be used to transport vehicles and equipment to beachheads.
