I was blessed to not be laid off at CD, but I need a change of pace and was beyond lucky to get one. I've seen enough horror stories that I'll be a little anxious until my actual start date, but I'm excited for the next opportunity and really hope this and move to Seattle will be good for me. (2/2)

Yeah, it's not really similar at all. The way my brain processes language between pen and paper versus computer is pretty noticeable, and I can completely see the validity of just moving forwards and letting it all out before even thinking of revising.

Really depends on the IP, though. Some are close to 1:1 the original character style, and some are this shit.

YouTooz is taking over more, and unfortunately a lot of their designs, while at least not the same dead-eyed A-pose bullshit, also don't really match the original character designs well at all and still look pretty stupid.

The best test I ever did was for Lightspeed LA in 2022, I wrote and gave a pitch presentation. 1. It was relevant to the job. 2. It made the test a discussion with your collaborators. 3. It guaranteed you spoke to a person after putting in hours of time. 4. It was properly high-level. (4/4)

Game design is so subjective and so iterative that even a group of successful designers working together for years are going to disagree and change their positions regularly, and acting like a doc is how you evaluate design thought process and collaboration is just ridiculous. (3/4)

Most tests are not constructive for evaluating designers, many are flawed in asking you to critique the company's games (I could write 1000s of words about why this is a bad idea), and a DESIGN test above all should be a discussion starting point, not a screen, for anyone above a junior. (2/4)

Yeah I thought that was the joke for a sec

Right? That type of boss is definitely universal, and it's incredible how the show just keeps stirring in more and more maddening relatable things into the pot.

Idk, I see complaining about this stuff nonstop on every social platform I use and have for several years, but I guess I can acknowledge that people who don't care or like that stuff aren't going online to complain about it.

Given how much I see the ads trashed even in normal gaming forums and the live chat, I don't think that's the draw. I think it's more just the general production value of the whole affair, which obviously the ads help to pay for, but it's human nature to care more proportionally to presentation.

Yeah, I'm gonna remember the time he took a smashed-up cake and turned it into a mountain without the judges even noticing for a very long time. One of the most clutch saves the tent has ever seen.

Hm, well, I've been too burned by the "just one more" of JRPG recs to look into those, but the things that take up 90% of the discussion space in the genre really haven't changed much. People try to tell me Metaphor has interesting systems design, so I just don't trust much JRPG analysis.

Yeah, Team Cherry, Supergiant, and Sandfall are out back giving [redacted] to IGN and PC Gamer while Geoff watches from the cuck chair.

And I suppose everyone who actually discusses the awards, just like anyone discusses any arts awards, is just, I don't know, not real or is pretending or something? I've literally been in hours of discussions about them at this point, and hating ads didn't stop the discussions from happening.

The combat being "unbalanced" and incentivizing interacting with meaningful systems design is 100% of the reason I actually enjoyed playing this more than any JRPG I've touched. "Experimental" really doesn't give the right credit when it pushes forward a genre that's been stagnant for 2 decades.
November 17, 2025 at 10:50 PM
Quite the opposite in my eyes, it proved to me why I hated JRPGs all along, because it introduced actually interesting character customization and game mechanics. I've tried several "this is the best game ever" JRPG franchises, and this is the only one I actually had any amount of fun playing.
