I have been trying to @octranspo.com today but every route is so unreliable that it would have been 2-3 times faster to take my bike. Too bad all the roads on my route have paint (at best) for lanes and cars are all speeding. I wasn’t brave enough to try.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, we’re looking at you. Heck, it has been so bad here in Ottawa we would probably settle for the “balance” Brent complains about.
Imagine a 100m race where we’ve given cars an 80m head start after many decades of building almost ONLY for them. If we then set a transportation goal of “balance” between many more choices in getting around, by definition we have to prioritize the new choices for a while, or they’ll never catch up.

Horrifying but sadly not surprising.
That’s the correct high-level message that cities HAVE to understand if they ever truly want to become less car dependent and really multi-modal. And let’s be honest — I’ve seen very few cities claiming to want balance in policies/visions, that are doing anything even CLOSE to achieving balance. 3/

I wish this was what Ottawa’s mayor meant by balance. What he really meant was the status quo, which heavily favours the suburban car drivers.
I’m once again working with a city writing new integrated transportation & land use policy, and we’ve been discussing whether to PRIORITIZE walking, biking and transit, or achieve “BALANCE.” This is a key conversation where I sometimes give a fast and simple answer, but the truth is more complex. 1/
