Wizards of the Coast seems to really like this particular card design, huh?

(I may be putting cards away, and I have these three side-by-side.)

What?

(This is from the #GuildWars2 update notes.)

Well, this has been a fun and interesting little endeavor! I hope others have enjoyed it.

I'll leave you off with a few more GW1 screenshots. I certainly have taken a lot of them over the years!

Compare this picture from GW1. It uses the same tricks—fog, atmospheric perspective—to make distant objects feel distant. They're even massive! But they feel more distant to me; things are in the midground that the tricks are making appear closer. Even more things are in the foreground.

And all of that means that the smoke and mirrors used to make things feel distant is being undermined. Fog and atmospheric perspective are being used to make the buildings in this picture look distant, but they're too big to feel far away, and the ground doesn't lie.

Like, look at this picture from a car. On the right side, you can see a distant city, and beyond that are mountains. But the skyscrapers appear to be the same height as those mountains, right? And those streetlights really tower over even those!

So it's much, much harder for GW2 to present obstacles to player navigation, but stuff is just...bigger, too.

Like, look at this view from GW1! It stretches out before you!

Something about that grips me.

In Guild Wars 2, that's something you can climb, and it isn't even that much of a climb.

Here are some mountainous scenes from GW1. Well, the first is mostly because I thought it was pretty as I was looking for an example. But that mountain in GW1 in the second can't be climbed.
September 22, 2025 at 8:01 AM
Now, look at this mountain in GW2. Atmospheric perspective is being applied to it, but you can see by looking at the ground that it's actually pretty close. The way it dominates the sky makes it seem massive, but that's also a product of proximity.

Have you ever looked at distant mountains in the real world?

Atmospheric perspective does make it clear the mountain is distant, but so, too, does the expanse of land leading up to the mountain.

Also, look at how it dominates the distance, but is still only going up halfway.

This led me to try to figure out why, which is why I wanted the comparison shots: I wanted something that was more of a direct comparison, rather than random, unrelated locations.

Though, here are a couple.
September 22, 2025 at 8:01 AM
I've been thinking about how Guild Wars 1 environments compare to those of Guild Wars 2. These are similar shots of two locations that are of the same place in both games.

Some thoughts in a thread.

So how many people are using Energy Chamber to charge up their spacecraft?

Hey @gavinverhey.bsky.social, now that you're getting the Tango land and Bicycle land cycles completed up with enemy pairings (and thank you for doing so!), when are the Borderposts? Pretty please?

Sincerely,

A Borderposts enjoyer

I have a huge fondness for five color value piles, so Bring to Light really appeals to me.

I'm also fond of ruins, so I guess it works that angle, too!

So, I was goldfishing a Commander deck that I had lying around on my desk that I haven't actually properly played with, and that resulted in me realizing that these two cards are a brutal combo.

Another #photograph from that trip last month. I really like the sky, but the silhouettes are key to this image for me. I really like that look. Frankly, I wish this was about as dark as it would get at night. (Alternatively, living in a place where I could see stars could work for me.)

Some really cool-looking clouds from my trip last month. :D

Behold, a cloud that looks like a wizard hat! From a recent trip.

A social media #game!

1. Non-compete and anti-moonlighting clauses are illegal.
2. Companies that are worth $1 Billion+ can't acquire, be acquired, or merge with any other companies/businesses.
3. The entire US is clothing-optional (right to nudity, with exceptions for necessary sanitation/safety).

While most of its petals have dropped at this point, I've really enjoyed having this view out my window this spring. 🌸🌸🌸

The spring flowers are one of the things I love about living here in the Pacific Northwest, especially given how long of a season we have of them blooming. :D

Here I am, pausing @playframe.bsky.social's Zelda: Wind Waker video from today, and wouldn't you know it, I get an excellent example of some Stretch in the animation of Link!

I might have to spend a while really sifting through Magic art if this was actually happening, but my first gut-instinct is Master Transmuter.

It's so beautiful and elegant, and I love the sci-fi feel to it, too. I think I thought of it first because it's so striking and memorable.
