Working the late shift tonight. I was trying to answer a question for a thing, and then remembered I had already addressed this very issue on a previous occasion, not only saving myself a ton of time but getting some great listening in as a bonus. win-win.

OK, so I didn't get anywhere near the word count I was aiming for today, but I have thoroughly enjoyed revisiting The Beatles Anthology, spending around four hours straight with a big stupid grin on my face watching the boys do their thing. They really are magnificent.

Just off the blower with Theo Travis chatting about this and that. I'm very happy to have written the liner notes for the new Soft Machine album, Thirteen, due out in March next year. In addition to the music, I'm also taken with the lovely cover art.

Looking for something to counteract the afternoon slump? Try a blast of this raucous 20th-century Karlheinz, man...

Today's instant mood uplift comes from my proximity to A Formal Horse's 2019 classic, Here Comes The Man From The Council With A Flamethrower.

Prompted by the "A movie that takes place where you’re from" thread doing the rounds , I give you Payroll. Filmed in my hometown of Wallsend, this gritty heist movie from 1961 was also filmed in nearby Tynemouth, Newcastle, and other locations. I LOVE the Belgian poster.

Just been reminded that on this day in 2019, I was *this* close to Peter Hammill and Isildur's Bane in a rehearsal room in Halmstad, Sweden, before a performance. As PH turned on his trademark roar, even my goosebumps got the shivers...

John's Away again. A reminder of a time when mainstream record companies were still taking a punt on jazz. This one, from 1976, is my favourite of the three he recorded for Vertigo. Lucky enough to see Away a few times, including the one supporting Steve Hillage on the L tour.
