If you want a quote for a new HVAC system, that’s totally fine. But don’t pay for it!

And if you really want a tune up, you’re probably better off working with a smaller, independent HVAC company that is actually going to inspect and clean your system. But you won’t get that for $8.88.

That technician is going to tell you about how much is wrong with your equipment, how it’s on the verge of breaking, and why you need a new system yesterday.

So why would they give that to you for $8.88?

It’s because it’s not actually a tune up.

It’s a sales call in disguise.

A service technician at $50/hr spends 1 hr in your house, and another hour driving to and from your house.

Add in other overhead like insurance, the cost of the van, etc, and it probably costs the company $200+ to send someone out to your house. (See www.heatpumped.org/p/pricing-tr... )

Pricing transparency: peeking behind the curtain of Heat Pump quotes
Heat Pump quotes are notoriously opaque - with long lists of cryptic model numbers and limited itemization. Why do they cost so much?

Fascinating, found some more info. Wonder if they bump the MSRP on cars with the converter www.caranddriver.com/news/a647152...

"The CLA requires 800-volt DC chargers for fast charging. Compatibility with 400-volt DC chargers will be available only with a factory-equipped converter that will be installed on CLAs launching in Spring 2026. Vehicles without the converter cannot charge at 400-volt DC chargers." Thoughts on this?

Yes! Check out this article: www.energyvanguard.com/blog/don-t-c...

I recently picked one up and it alarmed when I was cooking with our gas range and had all of the windows shut. The levels went down again once I cracked some windows. The normal CO alarm would have never picked it up

Speaking of monsters, we should do a modernized version of these ads for heatpumps. Terrifying as a kid.

It makes you wonder if the primary motivation is minimizing spend on warranty work while complying with their legal obligations… if you make it really hard to get a warranty replacement, people will just keep using what they have out of laziness
