I write boring things for big companies that don't use my name. I write other things here and use my first name. I have two sweet dogs that wish the UPS man wouldn't ring the doorbell.

(Same handle on Dead Bird site--account now dormant--and on Threads.)
Good pie is better than good cake, but making a good pie crust is a lot harder than making a good cake.

The right* to overthrow a tyrannical government isn’t enumerated in the US Constitution. It’s mentioned in the Declaration of Independence—not as a law they’re passing, but as a fundamental fact that’s always true whether governments acknowledge it or not.

anyway I’mma start calling our service members “peaceiors” just to piss off Whiskey Pete

It would feel weird to me to use “troops” to refer to sailors on a warship!
November 25, 2025 at 4:36 PM
I used to use the word but it was so I wouldn’t have to say “soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines”. I wonder if that’s part of what gave the term legs? It’s less dry and antiseptic than “servicepeople”…

Screwtape had a line about how “democratic” can mean “behavior that promotes democracy” *or* “behavior that’s common on democracies”, and the two often conflict.

It’s similar here: Trump’s behaving like he’s already an autocrat, it isn’t behavior that’s likely to establish a stable autocracy.

…here it is, from “Screwtape proposes a toast”. As Screwtape notes, the insight isn’t original to him.

And again, “behavior autocrats like” is often not the behavior that promotes or preserves autocracies!

Could they turn this around? Maybe. It ain't over.

But the trendline on the 'Trump regime' is bad and the people running it are not very capable.

Meanwhile mass protests suggest the balance of 'street violence' potential is not on the regime's side.

We know this is a bid for authoritarian governance and at this point it is clear it is failing

We know in other countries, such failures generally end with "and then he fled to Russia" or "and then he went to trial" or "and then he and his entire family were murdered."

Why would we be different?

The joke I was going for here is we should follow Japan’s custom of eating KFC for Christmas and specifically do it by eating KFC for Thanksgiving but I don’t know if the joke merited three tweets so
