I have a personal connection to this episode in Canadian colonial cruelty: my uncle was a cop who went to Kenya as security for a Canadian bank during this period. I don't have details about his activities (besides that he stole Kenyan ebony carvings) but it's safe to assume that he knew Timmerman.

Timmerman himself was a veteran of repression, having played a key (violent) role in suppressing the On-To-Ottawa trek of homeless men fighting for their rights in the 1930s.

The Winnipeg Free Press ran laudatory articles about Timmerman's work in Kenya, talking around his torture as "strict methods" but celebrating his commitment to "civilization." Canadian newspapers and politicians considered Kenyans to be beneath them, as some of the quotes in this section illustrate

We all watched Israel launch an unprovoked assault, it is already on Wikipedia, which prompted Iran to fire missiles in retaliation. There is no ambiguity about who shot first, it was Israel. Canadian PM issues a statement about Israel's right to defend itself.

Where would they get such a horrific idea?

Canadian militarism and imperialism is never the answer and I'm really looking forward to this discussion with two people I respect immensely, hosted by organizations that are doing really important work.

I've been reading a lot this week about Austria in the 1930s. Successive right wing governments that culminated in a Fatherland Front govt (fascist) that presided over poverty and decline but opposed Nazi annexation bc they believed in "Austria for the Austrians" and urged people to "Buy Austrian."

No one wants to hear it, but there is no separating Canadian patriotism from colonialism; they are the same project (whether the patriot celebrates it or denies it)

Don't worry, Trump hasn't interrupted Canadian colonialism. The red flag so many are rushing to drape themselves in is still the flag of genocide, from Turtle Island to Palestine.
