Turns out what I needed was a bit of that "12PM is noon, not midnight" flavor to make things work.
It'll never stop being amazing how some intuitive concepts can be devilishly difficult to implement in code while some other mind-bending stuff can be expressed in elegant one-liner solutions.

You know you've complicated things when a simple add/subtract expression for switching between tracks turns into this kind of procedure and it's 100 lines long.
