Did you know that Olympic curling stones come from just one tiny island in Scotland?

Granite from Ailsa Craig has been used to make Olympic curling stones since 1924. Below, you can see a thin section in cross polarised light.

Opportunity to lobby MPs to bring up STFC issues with Ian Chapman in select committee meeting.
That'll be MPs from Newcastle Central/West, Mid-Norfolk, NW Hants, Gravesham, Henley & Thame, Cambridge, MK, Stoke-on-Trent South, South Derbyshire, Erewash and Newton Abbot. If you're in one of those areas and would be willing to write to your MP today that would be amazing.

UKRI funding has been eaten by inflation for more than a decade. Just put more cash into the system for project grants, or UK science won't recover from the current catastrophe
Today, we're sharing an open letter from our Chief Executive, Professor Sir Ian Chapman, outlining changes to UKRI investment approach, and addressing concerns about research funding and the financial position of STFC. Read his letter here: www.ukri.org/news/open-le...

We thought we should recap our story for new followers:
1. Old King George is a 170-year-old oak in Wivenhoe, Essex which alongside a mature horse chestnut, was due to be felled following pressure linked to a subsidence claim by Aviva in early 2025. So far, they survive thanks to a community effort.

The irony in this award is agonising. He did, indeed, “help to shape the university sector as we know it today.” As noted, he oversaw the introduction of a new fee regime with no provision for inflation, which is why, 15 years on, the sector is bankrupt.
