the actual immigration system per US law is so unworkable and impossible and grotesque for any purpose (family unification, economic growth, humanitarian refuge) that people simply do not believe that it says what it says.

The rhetorical difference is subtle but the substantial difference is profound between “I will work with mr trump to deport criminals” and “I enforce the law in New York City. Here is what the law says, including some ‘may’ provisions.”

I think this is an overstatement? Mamdani said he just explained to Trump the law. That does not imply a statement that he is willing to collaborate.

But for responsible use of social science research, we should cite the findings of particular papers, not their discussions of other research - that makes it easier to compare across findings and track claims to their originating research.

Among other things, you cannot win over ideologically committed fascists by saying you are going to address their legitimate concerns (unclear whether this works for “protest votes” either, but probably with a different mechanism.)

This is from their review of previous scholarship; this study in fact found the opposite, which is an extremely important development for addressing the problem.

Stunning moment:

Mamdani is asked if he still considers Trump a fascist.

As he begins answering, Trump, while slapping Mamdani on the arm, interrupts: "Just say yes, I don't mind."
