To add, modern management likes data like a dragon likes gold: they hoard it, but have little desire to actually effectively use it.

I am offended. I put googly eyes on all things. Everything is better with a googly eyes on, thrice so tools that can separate limbs from people.

I kinda expect some folks to start overfitting their models on cycling pelican drawings.

I’m really interested in what made so much of the cluster go down to begin with: my own assumptions is that just getting replacement brokers up fast enough solves most of the problems that are not due to bugs in Kafka itself.

Kafka has sharp edges (I was poked by multiple myself), but I don’t think it has more than any other similarly important component.

I do suspect that the operational knowledge for running Kafka at scale isn’t as distributed across the industry as that for some other products of similar scale.

container images are another non-solution here. it's the environment equivalent to static builds (which everyone gave up and just does, both for binaries and containers, but this wasn't the future I was promised damn it)

It's like browser tabs: yes, it's solves a problem. That should've been solved by the window manager. Instead we have multiple ways to handle multiple panes from multiple apps, all on the same desktop. XEROX parc would never.

Guess I misstated the point: that we can't just run things, that we need to juggle multiple environments, and multiple package management systems on the same machine, means something is fucking broken.
December 18, 2025 at 1:36 AM
I'd stop the conversation at "Node.js version managers". That our package management is so broken is enough to get me mad enough to net get into the names of the various shards.

I was actually debating if to write "they" or "we":

I am in opposition to contemporary Zionism, but I also distance myself from "Anti-Zionism" exactly because too many folks calling themselves such also provide cover for anti-semites, either on purpose or by careleness (not that it matters)
December 17, 2025 at 10:56 PM
Not that I think Jewish and Israeli politics are not something the average anti-semite is familiar with, or care about: as you implied, you won't have anti-semites attacking the crowd at a Kahanist-aligned synagogue because it is Kahanist-aligned, but because it's a synagogue.
