Not to flog a dead institution but... Captured by corporate interests, embraced eugenics (“only disabled/old/vulnerable people are going to die, don’t worry”) & ran full tilt into offloading collective responsibility onto individuals. And now we are, predictably, here 😐 This is going to kill people.

As Canada loses measles elimination status…there’s a lot we might learn about public health approaches from other parts of the world. African countries are doing some things well. Public health leaders & politicians really threw us into Victorian-ass times over here

May Leslie and Alice rest in peace. Thinking of their loved ones. They each clearly meant so much to so many people 🩷 I didn’t know them well but both were super encouraging about the podcast and that meant a lot to me. We will keep fighting for the future they were fighting for

It really seems like this administration is trying to eliminate the field of public health. MPHs and DrPHs will no longer be considered "professional degrees" by the DOE and, therefore, will face limits to accessing federal student loans.

In a statement, CBC told me:

"After reviewing the interview, we concluded that it needed to be re-edited and re-posted to include further context and questions around the procedure and treatment Deacon experienced. That has now been done."

Will update the story with this soon.
Earlier this week, the CBC broadcast an interview with Gill Deacon, discussing her Long COVID recovery using brain retraining.

They didn't tell you the specific brain retraining program, the Lightning Process, has been accused of exploiting patients.

if it won’t do what’s right to keep its own people safe at work, how can you trust it to tell you how to protect yourself at yours, and to demand better of your government?

i loved my job. and i still i believe in the public broadcaster.

but you can’t compromise with COVID.

or the truth.

and that’s how the CBC has not only failed me and the rest of its employees, it has also failed you and the rest of canadians.

it has failed to protect us and our families from the real harms of COVID. and it has failed to adequately inform you and all canadians of the risks of this disease.

but COVID is incompatible with business as usual. because COVID is a workplace safety issue—one that demands a complete occupational reset to adequately deal with it.

like most corporations, though, CBC is unprepared to lead that vital transformation of the status quo.

it can only follow.

this is known science. what is still unknown is the cumulative impact of dozens of COVID infections over a lifetime.

but on most days, that’s not the messaging you hear on CBC or other legacy media. the quirks episode was an exception, not the norm.

for the most part, it’s business as usual.

Read this thread! 🧵 It’s been clarifying to witness just how fast workplaces went from “we’re all in this together” to “forced infection is a condition of employment”. No discussion about making in-person work safer. CBC’s COVID coverage leaves much to be desired and sadly, this experience tracks.
