(at least relatedly,) it's important to find the right balance between "if it's worth doing it's worth doing well" and "if it's worth doing it's worth doing poorly"
Sometimes bad ideas are bad. "Just try it, maybe it will work!" is not costless. You usually get one or two swings of the axe, and when you spend a bunch of time and political capital pursuing a project that fails, it discredits the whole movement to no benefit.

I think reading the plot summary has its place periodically.

Sometimes a show has an interesting premise, but has become un-enjoyable to watch as the writers drag it out. And sometimes the show remains great, but watching it is negatively impacting my life, as I should be doing other things.

For the climbers…
When the gear is so bad your second starts laughing and takes a picture.

I have a 3 year old and a 2 week old, and I had a great Father’s Day with both of them. But while things even out as time goes on, I am reminded that for the first year or two, we should probably skip the dads and just celebrate Mother’s Day twice.

TBT to my proudest rock climbing accomplishment; before kids, when I was stronger. But @patr1ck.bsky.social gives me hope that I can get back there again.

For permitting purposes, this is a renovation. But the original framing will be mostly gone by the time we are done. Building a house inside a house.

In general, never assume people will be significant better or worse than they are right now, and operate accordingly. If your theoretical politics requires people not to suck, your politics is not going to work.

Been thinking about getting back on social media. The bird looks highly unappealing these days, so going to reanimate this account and see how it goes.

Nice fall weather, and working in Greektown. Couldn’t pass up some Loukoumades.

A good contractor can make relatively cheap materials look great.

But so often I see people splurge on materials, and cheap out on the installation - almost invariably looks terrible.

Southern Ontario labour update:

Did a job that involved 20min of labour, and $160 in materials. My boss charged the client $900.

But I spent 4 hours driving and ~$50 on gas. Apparently there was no one closer to do the work.

The best way to finish a deck?

Run boards long
Cut in place (a track saw helps)
Install border if desired

Just don’t make any mistakes on that cut. Expensive!
