Not really. People call themselves skeptics all the time without actually doing the work. When I was active in the skeptic community, more than one person said they were “skeptical of my skepticism” or similar nonsense. It’s not just climate/vaccine, but a way of expressing general doubt.

I know what the word is supposed to mean. But it’s super hard to stop a word use when it’s gained a popular colloquial meaning.

@danielloxton.bsky.social Unfortunately, attempts at gatekeeping of a word don't work. Word usage evolves. Because "skeptic" is not a scientifically defined term, it's used casually and can become culturally useful with another meaning. To combat it, I think you have to get creative.
