It is genuinely fascinating to me that so much authoritarian and fascist rhetoric gets a foothold in the UK at all because that country fuckin' despises its own police. The military escape the scorn a little better but it's a thin margin.

I lived there for 28 years and the most flattering praise I heard about the police was "Well, they're doing a hard job as best as they can."
