As telephone usage expanded, exchanges in large cities often had hundreds of operators working at multiple switchboards, while in small rural areas had one or two operators. Aside from connecting calls, operators often gave the time, weather reports, and connected callers to emergency services.

Once telephone numbers and directories were introduced, the operator answered, “Number, please.” Sitting in front of a switchboard, an operator manually connected two telephones using a cord with a plug at each end. #GiveMeARing #Telephones #TelephoneRetrospective

The design of the sculptures was inspired by the construction of the Wright brothers’ first airplane. The sculptures are functional in that they diffuse direct sunlight from the skylights, reflect light up, and project a dappled play of light into the space.
