Today is Pan American Aviation Day! Celebrated on the day the Wright brothers successfully flew a heavier-than-air, mechanically propelled aircraft at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903, Pan American Aviation Day was declared in 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

As telephone usage expanded, exchanges in large cities often had hundreds of operators working at multiple switchboards, while in small rural areas had one or two operators. Aside from connecting calls, operators often gave the time, weather reports, and connected callers to emergency services.

Telephone subscribers in a designated area were connected by wire to a central exchange. A caller rang the exchange, and the telephone operator answered. They then told the operator the name of the person or business they wished to reach.

The design of the sculptures was inspired by the construction of the Wright brothers’ first airplane. The sculptures are functional in that they diffuse direct sunlight from the skylights, reflect light up, and project a dappled play of light into the space.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) was the national airline of the People’s Republic of China which began operating scheduled domestic flights in 1950. China opened its borders to foreign travelers in the late 1970s. By the mid-1980s CAAC was offering long-haul service to SFO.
