I've no real knowledge of US TV then or now TBH. But surely shows needed to have seven seasons of c 24 eps in order to be syndicated? So they'd be dead before that happened. But I agree they were still perceived as ephemeral. Title cards reading "Tonight's Episode".

Surely that happened when archive TV on home video and archive channels became a thing? This stuff suddenly had an ongoing afterlife, rather than one repeat and never again. You didn't have to remember back five years, you only had to remember the episode you saw a month ago on UK Gold.
