At last, a chance to repost my favourite ever font-related controversy with alt-text, now that Calibri is back in the news.
Pakistan's government is in trouble. And its fate may hinge on a Microsoft font. Judicial investigators probing the financial assets of the country's Prime Minister and his family allege his daughter (and apparent successor) forged documents to hide her ownership of overseas properties. How did they reach that conclusion? The documents from 2006 submitted by Maryam Nawaz (daughter of PM Nawaz Sharif) were in the Calibri font. That font, according to the investigation team's leaked report, wasn't publicly available until 2007.

It’s weird that Americans call an abrupt departure an ‘Irish goodbye’. If you’ve ever grown stubble waiting for two Irish people to leave each other’s company you’ll know just how bizarre this term is. Whole afternoons of my childhood were spent outside our front door, saying goodbye to visitors. And that’s what this feels like; those extended, clingy little stand-offs we had every weekend as kids, when visitors were ushered out to their car by the entire family. At this point, unless your parents were psychopaths or had started a small fire that demanded their attention, another full-length conversation would kick off, extending their visit by 40 minutes at least. This took place over the roof of the car, or a gate post, and the game was for each adult to make it clear they didn’t want it to end, but without ever being so gauche as to say so. It was basically an extended rendition of ‘no, you hang up’, but for taciturn Irish dads. In the hands of a true master, this parting chat could last longer than the original visit. Fresh rounds of tea would be discreetly placed nearby, at which point all the children would have neatly slipped away to get in some bonus playing.

For years I've told people our family was so big, our christmas turkey had to be cooked by nuns.

In reality, the nuns replaced that turkey with one the size of a hatchback. I swear one year it came stuffed with a cooked ham.

Some things about having such a large family are stranger than people even think to suggest. I remember standing with my father in the kitchen of Nazareth House convent, waiting on them to deliver the truly gigantic turkey they cooked for us every Christmas. Officially, they were cooking the self- same large turkey we had brought over, since our own oven was too small to cook something big enough to feed the entire clan. But, in practice, they gave us a brand- new, much larger turkey, bearing little resemblance to our own. The turkey we were... handed by Sister Angela, which had gone in the size of a ruck sack, was now the size of a Fiat 500, resplendent in garnish and trimmings. It was the kind of thing you could imagine being taken out of the oven by a forklift, rather than a kindly nun, but that’s underestimating Sister Angela, a lovely, burly woman from the west of Ireland who had a smile that could melt glass and forearms that bent steel. She was effectively Popeye in a habit, and seemed to enjoy nothing on Earth more than pre paring us a turkey that, once eaten, we could happily strip to the bones and convert into a back bedroom. This subterfuge was, of course, never directly acknowledged.

There’s a story my family tells around Christmas. As kids, that time of year was obviously pretty manic, but made more so by the fact each of us fancied ourselves as having prom inent careers in showbusiness. We all sang in choirs at one time or another, and some of us in several at the same time. I was less involved than most, yet even I sang in choirs for at least ten years, and the Christmas period was a time of constant shuttling between different masses or meetings or festive per formances. Most of us were then also in school shows, nativities or orchestra recitals, and in the run- up to Christmas, a few of us even did the fully produced commercial pantos in town. I somehow never made the cut for those things, which I found odd because my kind eyes and easy way with people reminded many of a young Marlon Brando. In any case, quite aside from the rigmarole of cooking and presents and the management of infant expectations that Christmas would demand from a single parent of eleven children, my father was rushed off his feet getting us to and from these various functions, and dealing with the preparations for overlapping performances. Walking through our house over Christmas was like a trip through the Warner Bros. lot in late- seventies Hollywood, only instead of showgirls and spacemen there would be assembled children dressed in their Sunday best, or as shepherds, or in the costume of some brutally crowbarred topical character favoured by school plays at the time. Many will remember my delighted turn as Reuben, the inexplicably French brother in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, not least for my having done the entire thing dressed as Eric Cantona. One of those Christmassy mornings, my brother Shane was singing at three Masses in a row. That’s the 10, the 11 and the 12:15. After each, my dad would talk to a few fellow parishioners here and there, and pick up others of us who were at other Masses or concerts nearby. Owing to the comings and goings, headcounts got twisted, and on the drive back Shane turned round, surveyed the contents of the minibus and noticed that Dearbhaile was missing. She had been there in the chapel after the service, but had obviously stayed too long chatting to a friend and Daddy, understand ably frazzled and depleted, had taken off without realising she wasn’t on board. He turned tail and raced back to the church to pick her up. He was furious. ‘How did none of you notice she was missing?’ he fumed, and everyone felt chastened at their lack of aware ness, imagining her now crying on the steps of the church alone, or worse, in the company of scandalised and judgemental parishioners – or clergy – wringing their hands, apt to be tell ing tales very soon about the poor, rudderless O’Reilly clan, demented by grief, incapable even of counting themselves. When the bus finally reached Dearbhaile, however, she was smiling and happy, and neither in the company of some sour- faced scold among the congregation, nor alone. I was standing there, unmissed, beside her.

It is twelve years today since I got my first ever Rush Hour Crush published in the UK Metro.

You say you recognise ‘legitimate concerns’ and take a tougher line on, say, refugees. You accept the far right’s entirely false premise that immigrants increase crime, that the housing crisis is due to migrants rather than your own bad policies, or that foreigners are swamping the health service, rather than holding it up with their bare hands in the face of your own drastic underfunding of the system. And you become less popular. You, the sensible moderate, continue to slide in the polls against the very parties whose policies you were trying to steal. A sizeable number of your own base are appalled, and you have failed to impress a single racist. Because everywhere, from France to Germany to the Netherlands to the UK, as with Fanta and its supermarket imitators, it turns out people prefer the original to the copy. You’ve driven away your traditional base, while sanitising the racism of the far right for low information voters, who now consider them more reasonable. You have moved the sensible middle position toward the far right – where you now stand, boxed in, by the ghouls you've just baptised as moderates. And the slide continues. Because you cannot placate these people. You cannot reach an end. Round up every refugee in camps and they'll want the next cruelty. Their concerns are not about society, the economy or public safety, they're an ever-moving target of fear and hatred that cannot be sated, it must be challenged. And now it’s too late, because you thought that you - and you alone! - would be the first centrist to steal the fascist’s lunch by agreeing with them rather than fighting them with every fibre of your being.

Watching Stranger Things and I can't tell you how proud I am of this man, my grandad's great grandfather, for saying this.
Stranger Things' Noah Schnapp - who got his surname from the sound his joints make when he stands up too quickly from a game of bridge at his local rec centre - is sitting in a car and saying the words "And I'm not a kid anymore." This would be an understatement, since he is a 900 year old man who has been locked into playing a 14-year-old for a decade now, and we are glad he has finally reached through the screen to admit, once and for all, the folly of his lies.

For those wondering, some proof I was not exaggerating my lack of rocket making abilities for comedic effect.

I HAVE OTHER SKILLS.
I– ahem, we – settle on a simple design utilising a single loo roll, painted red, with a conical tip and some supportive fins at its base. The fins are gold, which does make for a natty look that complements the rocket’s crimson fuselage, but is primarily because I’ve cut them from a box of Weetabix. My daughter paints avidly, making sure that every inch of the loo roll – and her hands, wrists, chin and nose – are fully pelted with red. I get to work making the conical point, and quickly discover I don’t really know how to do it. Every attempt I make looks more and more like a lampshade. And I do mean every attempt, since even the one I finally tape into place sits atop the cylinder as if it is a hat the rocket is wearing rather than an airlocked portion of a working spacecraft.

The just recently sold house of Pharrell Williams, which is a glass edifice in three parts that looks like a newbuild office building in an industrial estate outside Strabane.

Is this seat that looks like it has a Derry accent conscious? Many users feel they're talking to a real person, perhaps one of your da's mates saying "Did ye aye mucker, right enough?". Scientists say it's time to consider whether they're onto something.
An old brown leather seat I saw about ten years ago whose combination of buttons and creases forms a very pleasing, open facial expression that I maintain looks like it has a Derry accent.

Nothing was more of a revelation than a recent trip to Ireland, however. Each summer, I do interviews for the Belfast dance music festival AVA, and regularly end up surrounded by beautiful, positive and accomplished twentysomethings. At one point during my last jaunt, just such a room of young people began avidly swapping tales of disastrous Hinge and Tinder dates. I offhandedly mentioned I’d never used a dating app, because my relationship with my wife predates the invention of the smartphone by about six months. Now, I realised, it was me doling out the psychic shocks, as I looked up to find my youthful colleagues were staring at me as if I was a gnarled and toothless corpse they’d just pulled from a bog, one which had now gasped back to life, demanding mutton and hog’s blood. With something like reverent horror, they listened as I went on. Whiskers grew from my cheeks as I informed them that, for many years, text messages didn’t show you when the other person was typing. “You couldn’t even tell if they’d seen or received your message,” I told one, while another cast me a worried look and asked me I’d like someone to fetch me a chair.

In April, I wondered what a trans toilet ban might look like in practice. Trans people and their cis women allies have been sounding these alarms for years. It now seems clear that the UK government took all these dire warnings as policy proposals.

With 8,000 holders of gender recognition certificates now unsure if they’re barred from peeing once they leave the house, some have argued that the provision of millions of unisex toilets might be the answer. Considering these would be the same unisex toilets they never got round to building for Britain’s 4m pre-school age kids — and their awkward dads — we can dismiss this stalling tactic with the contempt it deserves. We might also consider what this means for the millions of cis women who do not fit the standard, sexist notion of “femininity” which logic dictates they must be checked against to enforce this ruling. Too tall, perhaps, too strong-jawed, or short-haired — anything that one patron, one witness, one supermarket or leisure centre security guard might consider cause to question their femininity. And how might they prove their “real” gender? How would you? Perhaps my conception of feminism has been mis-calibrated all this time, and true freedom for women is mandating that they carry their birth certificates around with them all day, so they can be checked by citizen genital inspectors, male and female, encouraged to presume you’re a predator first, and work backwards from there.
