To quote Kathleen Edwards herself:

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

I love all her albums, full of many terrific songs. “Six O’Clock News” is stone a classic, as is “In State,” “Hard on Me,” “I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory.” And the song I nominated too. She is one of my absolute favorites which is why I feel so sour about that song.

Ha I forgot about that line. She was friends with John Roderick apparently. I think they may have toured together at one point.

Same goes for the line about “uniforms” which I read as pro-cop—which, again, feels wrongheaded in this age.

I find the whole song really jarring because this kind of viewpoint, as far as I know, has never shown up in her work before. But it also doesn’t scan to me as a character study.

One could argue that an artist needn’t share your politics, but in 2025 I think tossing off lines about “people get worked up about a baseball cap” as if it’s the same as being worked up about an outdoor cat to be insulting and tone deaf, at best.

And this album is produced by Jason Isbell too so that caused some dissonance as well.

Later on I’d seen her congratulating Bari Weiss on the CBS gig which kinda confirmed it for me.

It was just some posts here on Bluesky. Basically I find “Need a Ride” from the new album really upsetting. It feels very red-pilled - a stance I’d never associated with her before so it was a shock.

Kathleen Edwards is one of my favorite songwriters going but after a week or so listening to her album, I just can’t get over how disappointing “Need a Ride” is. Some real red state red meat. I never associated her with this perspective before.

Love that Justin Walter album. His album from this year was great too.

Big Thief was a grower. It felt slight on fist listen, in the shadow of DNWMIBIY. The more I listened the more I think it’s their most cohesive album—again, in contrast to the (intentionally) messy last album. More than other BT albums I think this is best experienced as a beginning-to-end listen.
