Well, I will be spending 2026 working on a graphic novel...
I have learned that trying to balance work/life is super challenging when working on GN's, but worth the effort. Not just for me, but for my family. I've also learned to take a step back from social media when it's messing with my head & creativity. :) #kidlitchat

Exciting!!! I'll now be writing/illustrating a third Kindred Dragons book (I'm currently working on the second) as well as another middle grade graphic novel with Abrams Books!

My kids' elementary school used to have a book-themed costume parade, where all the kids marched around dressed up as book characters. So fun. Mostly kids wore their normal costumes and found a book to match (like a spiderman book, etc.) but some people did get really creative. #kidlitchat

I try to keep in mind that there will always be a gap between the ideal art I'd like to create and what I actually create, and to make peace with that. It's probably also a good thing: that feeling motivates me to keep learning & improving.
2 pieces of advice for young artists:
- In every graphic novel I’ve ever done, I think there are maybe 2 images I think are really good. Everything else is “good enough.”
- That thing you drew that you hate is someone else’s favorite drawing of yours.

Advice to my younger introverted self who just wanted to stay in my creative hermit-cave & CREATE:
Don't wait 'til after you're published to learn how to do presentations / public speaking / self- & book-promotion. Yes, even YOU can learn, even if these things terrify you right now.

The nicest thing about the book event at Honey Locust Farms last weekend is that if any conversation got too awkward, I could Homer Simpson myself into the foliage.

if i have any advice to aspiring comic artists, it's that unless you actively really enjoy the process of drawing detailed backgrounds, you will save yourself a lot of time and energy developing a style that does not require you to always include them
