My oldest is 18 but because to me he is still just a sweet tiny baby boy, I didn’t even think to remind him to register/vote in the Virginia election. Last night he texted that he’d been excited to vote for the first time yesterday. Even prouder that he did it independently! 💕💕

My colleague @sarahmccammon.bsky.social looks at the Population Shift playing out in Finland, where people are choosing not to be parents - or having very small families - despite generous support from the government. A beautiful, human portrait of changing families. www.npr.org/2025/10/27/n...
Finland's stubbornly low birth rate shows why a population shift may be inevitable
Famous for baby boxes and expansive pro-family policies, Finland continues to see one of the lowest birth rates in Europe, as a case study in how policy solutions may not address the population shift.

Can the Population Shift cause whole communities to thin and unravel? @sarahmccammon.bsky.social explored that question in one of the oldest communities in Europe for @npr.org 's new series. Greece is closing 700 schools. Its low birth rate is to blame www.npr.org/2025/10/29/n...
Schools close and island life is under threat as Greece reckons with low birth rates
In Greece, fewer babies means difficult decisions, especially on remote islands where low birth rates are forcing some schools to close and raising questions about the future of island culture.

Every top-15 GDP country is having too few kids per family to sustain populations. Dynamic economies including China Italy and South Korea are losing population. *Population Shift* A global project from NPR & member stations. My reporting with @sarahmccammon.bsky.social www.npr.org/2025/10/27/n...
People are having fewer kids. Their choice is transforming the world's economy
Family size around the world is dropping. That choice by couples is triggering a population shift that's sending shock waves through economies.

As recently as the 1990s, women in South America and the Caribbean had 3-4 children on average. Today, as @brianmannadk reports, women in Chile are having just over 1 per child:

Chile's plunging birth rate may foreshadow future in U.S.
Chilean families are having only one child on average. U.S. birthrates are also dropping but it's unclear whether the U.S. will follow into the growing group of "very low" birthrate countries.

People often ask me about the profile/beliefs of the #exvangelical. Until now, much of what I could say has been anecdotal or based on broader data looking at a variety of religious/political groups. Which is why it’s so exciting that @PRRI has a deep dive on Exvangelicals: prri.org/spotlight/ex...
