Today is the 4th anniversary of the worst ever tragedy in the Channel.

At least 27 men, women & children drowned in the freezing water, & 4 more have never been found.

Since then, neither we nor the French have done a thing to offer people in this situation with real solutions.

So many of the refugees that I met Calais and Dunkirk in September were women fleeing the war in Amhara, Ethiopia. It is, in the West, a totally forgotten war, which I regret to say I was totally ignorant of before I met them. bbc.com/news/article...

The fact that the BBC has made serious culpable errors does not negate the point that there is a real and concerted right-wing media campaign to destroy it. Both points can be true at the same time and the campaign would not end even if the errors did.

The BBC just caving on this and making no attempt to defend itself feels quite scary. Where do we go from here?

In the week I visited the Loon Plage camp in Dunkirk for a special report for @theleaduk.bsky.social a man was found dead by the side of the road and another in critical condition after being hit by a truck. Six people died or went missing in the sea.
Life at Loon Plage is tough: there is no running water, no toilets, no permanent medical or welfare tents and people sleep in tents in the grass or bushes.

I met a woman today in Dunkirk who said her tent had been slashed by the police and all her belongings had been taken during an eviction in the Loon Plage camp. She couldn't understand why the police would do this to her. "I have come all the way from Libya," she told me. "I'm not giving up."
