New post: Trump promised that trade tariffs would bring jobs because companies would re-shore to the US. Is it happening?
I explore this question using the re-shoring decisions of Apple, LVMH, Alpine (Renault) and Hyundai.
US Trade Tariffs - Do Factories Re-Shore to the US?
Trump wanted to use tariffs to encourage companies to open factories in the US and create jobs. In this post, I discuss how companies are dealing with this so far.

From a legal perspective, very worrisome. Omnibus shouldn’t be used this way. From a content perspective: mixed feelings. There was a lot of confusion with companies and the burden is serious. But reporting has value, and they need a level playing field. Excluding SMEs distorts competition too.
The European Parliament approved a package to ease corporate sustainability reporting and due diligence requirements. EPP teamed up with conservative and far-right MEPs to pass the law.

I talked today with some people from @voltbelgium.org in Ghent (I’m not a member). Some thoughts:

The first part was about protecting the rule of law. Judges shouldn’t be politically appointed or pressured. Certainly true and we see mounting pressure on the #EU level, very worrying. National

“Multi-speed Europe” seems to be back, as Draghi makes the case for pragmatic federalism.

We need more flexibility than vetoes and consensus allows, but the consequences should also be carefully considered.

Great piece about the need to reform multilateral diplomacy. It’s been a success and it’s not really replacement, rather adding a new layer. Multilateralism is solving issues between nations, but planetary issues aren’t between nations. They need a different approach.

A good perspective of the Israel-Hamas deal and the (lack of) role of the #EU. Another wake-up call that we need a common defence and foreign policy.
What if the Israel-Hamas deal is less about peace and more about the next election? Netanyahu needs a win with his coalition crumbling, Trump wants a foreign policy (and Nobel worthy) trophy.

LLet’s see if it survives past the photo ops.

Incompetent managers often surround themselves with other incompetent people because that makes them feel less threatened and apparently incompetent people show more loyalty (no difficult questions).
The same is true for politics, see Hegseth, Navarro etc.

For anyone who needs an update on where we’re at with Ukraine.
None of these are remotely likely — placating Trump to buy time, demeaning as it is, makes sense.

But that should not be confused with a misguided belief Trump will engineer peace - let alone slow European support.
