At the risk of people side eyeing why I know this, the US national security/war on terror apparatus actually relies pretty heavily on people doing Middle East studies so they can hire those graduates as spies, so this is ironically a stick in bike spokes moment again

"This Iranian national was detained for standard questioning," the statement said. If randomly being yanked off a flight and detained for multiple days is now the standard treatment academics with Middle Eastern heritage can expect, that bodes poorly for Middle Eastern studies as a field here.

I don't think I was out to myself quite yet when I read the book, but I'm not sure
I do know that if I'd paid to see the musical and saw that ending unprepared, I would have been PISSED because so much of the musical is super queerbaiting about Glinda and Elphaba

Glinda and Elphaba, although Glinda abandons Elphaba in a fit of compulsory heterosexuality, as I recall
Elphaba does have the affair with Fiyero in the novel, but he's already married, and while she has a son by him, it's clear that part of her is permanently scarred by Glinda's abandonment

Google Assistant is a voice recognition engine on top of a machine-learning driven interface layer that can do stuff with lots of other apps running in Android, Chrome OS, etc. I don't use it much anymore, as my circumstances changed, but I used to use it extensively, for things like playing a song…

I still remember when I said, "Hey Google, play [song] for me," expecting exactly the same response from Google Assistant I've been getting since 2017, and instead Gemini responded with why it can't do that. I hit the hazard blinkers and pulled over to make sure it didn't happen again.
It's pretty unpopular widely because implementation is correlated with a decline in existing service quality. If it weren't for the addition of AI causing things like suddenly Google maps refusing voice commands, popular opinion would probably be different.

The easiest way for me to read is on my phone now, and I love using the Libby app for my library loans! I pre-order hardcover, read it in hand and then just check it out from the library when I want to reread! I will make sure my authors get paid multiple times!

(I realize this will not convince anyone who is going “ha ha, you can’t tell ME what to do!” or thinks it’s funny when authors go the food bank, but for the people who may have just fallen in sideways—libraries are AWESOME! The taxes are going to them, so make use of it!)
