I'll correct myself and say prog was basically gone by '87 (the original punks having shown the way), nobody I knew or listened to was drawing from it. Hair metal was widely reviled in a more immediate way.

I was 20 in '87. The two friends I had who were/are the biggest Beatles fans were 1) musicians, and 2) late-era boomers. I remember very little anti-Beatles sentiment. The music in my environment was mostly punk fusing with disco, country, or rock. If anything, it was prog being rejected.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts - a local theater had a single matinee screening at couple of weeks ago, I caught the first two hours or so. I knew I'd have to leave, but I wanted the theater to know I appreciated the screening (they showed No Other Land last year as well).
