And that’s it, really. Almost always I want the story that’s climbing all over the gelatinous glop of my brain, trying to become a part of my dna. That’s how you know it’s going to be one of the best ones.

Am I truly going to love telling this story? How much joy will it give me? Will I regret it if I tell the story that’s in my brain with its tiny fingers prodding and poking all over my gray matter?

4. But there’s a lot of space between unemployed writer and Stephen King, right? So that’s what I strive for—that vast middle space between hungry-under-the-bridge and ridiculously famous novelist. Believe me, there’s a lot of room for us all in that space.

The thing I ask myself before a new book

3. Your first book will very likely not be the breakout book everyone hopes for. But! It’s not pointless. If you keep at this long enough, improve your craft and are pleasant to work with, you will write more books. Some will do better than others. Will you be the next Stephen King? Not likely.

1. Plan a book that is high concept. To know what that means, read The Fire in Fiction by Donald Maas. It’s the kind of elevator pitch that everyone gasps at

2. Consider if you’re a YA writer, whether you could age up the themes and story elements to appeal to adults.

I’m to the point where seeing any news headline, before I even fully read it, gives me major anxiety.

Oh hello, insomnia, my old friend.

You are hilarious and ✨on brand✨ and that is always a good thing 😆

I think this is a good idea as long as the characters don’t continue to say each other’s names every other line of dialogue 😅

SERIOUSLY. Why are Dems so committed to taking the high road, being nice, and staying timid?? This is the time for anger and swift action. My confidence in things changing just keeps getting weaker the longer this clown is in office

Lmao this post just randomly popped up for me and I knew it was you before I saw the username 🤣

You’re so sweet, Misa, thank you!! What’s going on with you, book-wise and life-wise?? We need a catch up 😁

I definitely also think a huge part of it is that I was stuck in the mental health pit of doom for so long and this is my first book deal in years—feels very momentous and thrilling. Also, a very different book than my usual and! I! Can’t! Wait! To! Share! 🤩
