doing the undoable nobody's undone
it is also stupid to imagine that consumers will not change how they value your products when you replace their substance with surplus, easily-available AI slop

your whole market advantage is scale, and you're actively working to decimate that

your catalog of legacy IP will not save you

"ah, but a computer can generate thousands of pictures in the time it takes you to draw one"
ok but i want to draw a picture, and see a picture my friend drew
existential crisis resolved

humans intrinsically value doing shit. no matter how far back you go. even gilgamesh was fundamentally about some guy doing some shit
nobody stopped playing chess when computers got better at that, because it really doesn't matter that much if you value being an active participant in your own life.

there is so much incredible unity tooling that's stuck stagnating because it doesn't have the resources it needs to kick off

it kills me dead
November 17, 2025 at 9:59 PM
if people didn't value art and the process of creating it, nobody would bother lying about it

keep going
there are better futures than this ahead

finally,

not because i'm using those features all the time, but because it creates a really natural ramp into using them when i want

taking existing C# code and making it faster is a joy
November 13, 2025 at 9:21 PM
THIS IS SO TRUE

i'm doing a web project right now, and the only reason i'm not using C#/SDL is because .NET is still a little too jank/cluttered for those builds, but it's getting better all the time!

C# with its manual memory management features + HPC# in Unity with burst is like. ideal

this sounds great
but dang, yeah, it's a rhythm game, so the fact it muddies the gunshot sounds in action is leaned into
November 12, 2025 at 6:55 AM
i've heard a lot of weird percussive sounds, where it seems like they're trying to avoid clashing in the mix

obviously this is an all-timer, but it feels like an exception? idk if it even plays during gameplay, haven't gotten around to it yet

rip jesus you would have done some awesome mission impossible stunts
November 12, 2025 at 4:14 AM
anyway, have you read the vatican's statement on AI? some interesting stuff in here

people want to feel connected to the art they experience, they want to imagine there's a reality to it, and process stories are central to this

it's why tom cruise tried to kill himself on camera every time he made a mission impossible movie

this will only get more important with time
November 12, 2025 at 4:10 AM
"it's important to assume every game company is using AI"
true! yes! it is important to do that! because we're past the point where you'll easily be able to tell!
and if you're not using AI, be fucking loud about it and make it clear HOW YOU MADE WHAT YOU MADE

you HAVE TO DO THIS NOW
November 12, 2025 at 4:06 AM
the future where everything collapses into text-to-slop future is a DOA venture capital backed fever dream.
tragically, people innately value doing stuff.
November 12, 2025 at 4:03 AM
we aren't witnessing the death of craft, but genAI is creating cultural shockwaves we have to ride with clear intent, or we'll be thrown around like a ship in a storm

the way people value commercial art will shift to be increasingly process-focused, and we have to *push that*

i feel like i'm watching gameplay of the most earth-shattering rpg maker 2003 hack to ever hit the forums
in the best way possible
November 12, 2025 at 1:51 AM
i see at least one person is bookmarking this
if anyone reading starts playing with this, please let me know, i would love to follow along

i think the idea is if they lose enough money they'll hit underflow and wrap around
November 10, 2025 at 10:14 PM
both of these thoughts might be deeply flawed for reasons i don't have the experience to recognize yet, i'm still learning, but if i don't get them out somewhere it is going to haunt me. and now it is done, thank you, i yield my time
November 10, 2025 at 10:12 PM
my first impulse is just ('just') baking the volume mesh + slapping a realistic fake-volumetric material on the surface - but you could totally try the exact opposite, leaving it real-time and using a worse, obviously-thin material, evolving the look of PS2 light shafts with heavier dynamics
