We've had a huge accession of Salvation Army architectural plans covering the whole of the UK. Here are some lovely plans from the new hall at Hendon, designed in 1957 by C Wycliffe Noble

These Life Assurance companies were similar to, but different from The Salvation Army Assurance Society, whose records we hold.

A number of periodicals for members of The Salvation Army published surprisingly detailed advice for cyclists in the 1890s:
"Be it remembered, However Nice A Bicycle Looks, that, in itself, stands for nothing." 'Assurance' August 1898 p76

#WorldBicycleDay

The Salvation Army saw the potential of bicycles to spread the gospel in the 1880s and set up the Iron Horse Artillery. Evangelical Cycle Brigades followed in the 1890s.

This was the Holloway 1 Citadel of The Salvation Army, built 1890-1891, the total cost of the land and construction amounted to nearly £5,000. This drawing of the inside is from the opening report in 'The War Cry' newspaper for 23 May 1891

These bear comparison with uniforms worn by Salvation Army 'Slum Sisters' in the late C19th. Providing practical support to people living in deprived areas (where often even the police would be reluctant to venture), the special uniform legitimated the Salvationists' presence in these communities

Some of 'Minnie's' letters display fearsome examples of Victorian cross-writing! Where the paper is written on once and then again at right-angles.

Brilliant to see this article by @ellencssmith.bsky.social in print. Ellen used some of the letters we hold from Wilhelmina Murray written during the 1857 Indian Rebellion. One of our lesser-known collections!

The Salvation Army had a terrible time at the British seaside in the C19th! Just look at this 1884 riot in Worthing...

In part this was a class response to the 'vulgar' Salvation Army 'ruining' seaside resorts for middle-class holidaymakers.

Catherine Booth, co-founder of The Salvation Army, was a trailblazer for women’s rights in 19th century, a time when women’s roles were very restricted. Read how this radical approach to ministry helped transform women’s lives: brnw.ch/21wRbVv #iwd2025

It's #ScottishArchivesDay.

The Salvation Army began work in Scotland in 1879 but it took until 1882 to bring out a first 'annual' report.

The photograph is taken in Anderston, Glasgow in 1888.
