I actually think it's pretty easy to explain.
Younger people didn't buy into an older neoliberal elite's prejudices, the older neoliberal elite absolutely lost their shit at the notion that they might be called on to change, and fascists exploited that reactionary moment

Years from now, it'll be difficult to explain the things people in media were wailing about before all this. Sophomores writing underconsidered op-eds about cultural appropriation. Protests against demagogues on campus. YA drama. "Mobs" on Twitter. These were the threats to free society.

Immigration is a fake problem. We have politicians on the one hand who want to use immigrants as scapegoats for our real ones and politicians on the other who are too cowardly to stand against them and tell the truth. That is the entire situation. Until that changes, people will continue to die.

Being a POC in the US, in this very moment, has to be maddening : after a lifetime of normalised police (& now too #ICE) brutalities, you get to hear a call to abolish ICE as white people begin to suffer the same state of exception, but no introspection on the existence of the slave catching police.

The NA issue is that its people fundamentally misunderstands these are all characteristics of liberal democracies & its capitalist ideology.
They do not see how this has always applied to non-whites in their countries by their police, and to anyone they designated as global enemy by their military.

A central aspect of modern conservatism is the iron clad certainty that
1: some people count as people and some people don't.
2: it is their *exclusive* right to decide who goes in what group.
3: anyone who has a problem with this goes in the second group.

We should also talk more about how too many Republicans do not see entire swaths of people as actual people. You don’t casually muse about starting a war if you see troops as humans with lives and families. Normal people don’t fantasize about those from other countries dying for their own amusement.
