It’s hard to believe but there was a cartoon about an immigrant mouse and it was seen as totally fine and not controversial and not woke because it was an aspirational and nice thing about America that people could come here and find a better life

Closing King Lear this afternoon.
What an honor and true joy to swim in the intrigue, travel through Edmund’s rapid rise (and doom), and speak some stunning language.

I have @jacquiwine.bsky.social to thank for recommending this astonishing novel by Dorothy B. Hughes: a gripping narrative about a man in the frame for murder that that is ultimately an indictment of America itself. If you haven’t read it, do – but don’t read any more about it before going in…

Just going to throw this out there: memorizing poetry is a worthwhile activity! It allows you to internalize examples of carefully constructed and musical language. The possession of these fragments can (indirectly) make it possible for you to express yourself more precisely and beautifully.

One of the most essential skillsets in the age of individual "creators" (hate the term--creators is too nebulous and undersells what people do) and AI slop will be CURATION.

Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

Of course, the very second I sit down to do some narration recording, a mower or leaf blower begins sonically polluting my environment.

One of Us by Dan Chaon is a wild time!
Wondrous and gruesome. I squirmed a bit. It’s vivid and visceral and I loved it. Highly recommended.

I am trying to rise above it, but I want to snatch the boomer's phone out of his hand and throw it into the river. He is CONSTANTLY checking and poking at it during this matinee performance of Lear.
