The Muppet Christmas Carol at the Prince Charles cinema with a mulled wine. Could I get any more Christmassy ?

All this time in London & I have never been to the Prince Charles theatre - tonight I will be festive. Die Hard merrily on high

No audiobook for “Retribution Road” so haven’t finished yet (I get more time to listen walking the dog). I have nearly finished “The Traitors Circle” by Jonathan Freedland. More readable history of heroic Germans who were incredibly brave and took incredible chances to do what was right.

For some reason I couldn’t find a cinema showing “it was just an accident” in an evening slot. Tossed a coin between “Pillion”
& “Eternity” - eternity it is with a glass of red wine. Not sure a romcom will improve my mood but here we are…

I finished “Resurrection Man” by Eoin McNamee - enjoyed, was difficult to comprehend life in the troubles having never been to Belfast or experienced. This week my Mr B’s subscription has arrived so “Retribution Road” by Antonin Varenne - seems to be more dastardly deeds by the East India Company

There was a time when you flicked through channel and Peter Falk was starting his reading on a regular basis. Less channel flicking these days but there a bunch of movies like this I usually pause on for a time and then watch the whole thing

Sherlock decided to roll in mushrooms which my app tells me are poisonous…nice of him to keep me on my toes. He didn’t eat them - a bath and he’ll be fine

Still finishing “The Blackfire Blade” by James Logan. Started with a recap of book one which I’m very keen on and meant I enjoyed it a lot more. It’s a good adventure read and I’ll definitely do book 3. Next up is “Resurrection Man” by Elon McNamee

There’s a definite Gary Oldman / Churchill on the tube moment * 100 in Nuremberg - but I still enjoyed it. Michael Shannon dependably good but lots of other good performances (Richard E Grant also very good) and Russell Crowe does the trick of making a monster three dimensional

Business does not appear to be good for Wicked (at least in this showing at this cinema). All of 5 people. Still I have coffee, milky bar buttons and a good seat

I really enjoyed this, such a clear and defined magic system and lots of politics / gang warfare. Plus the Broken Binding versions were beautiful books

Got through some short reads last week. “William” by Mason Coile & “The Wax Child” by Olga Ravn. Good reads, William was pulp horror and The Wax Child was beautifully written (very melancholy). I’m just about to start “The Blackfire Blade” by James Logan - yet again I only vaguely remember book 1

Predictably leaving an Edgar Wight film you have to hunt the soundtrack - and so far I haven’t found a playlist. Anyway - it’s not a bad popcorn movie but there are better Richard Bachman stories out there

Took me a while and almost lost it but enjoyed the recommendation from here “Tainted Cup” last week (enough to buy the sequel). I’ve moved over to “William” by Mason Coile. This months book subscription from Mr B’s - so far so good at building an unsettling premise

About 1 hour off finishing “A voice in the night” by Simon Mason. Book 4 (I think) of an enjoyable crime / police procedural with good characters. Lacking motivation about what to start next so will see what others have

When the sound is screwed for the first 10 minutes and you aren’t sure if it’s meant to be that way (projectionist apologised / fixed). Anyway, entertaining film - I’d have preferred a different ending but it definitely grabs you

Another Monday night film, another jazz soundtrack. “The Mastermind”, think I enjoyed characters and mood more than the story
October 27, 2025 at 10:39 PM
On the last chapters of “The Zorg” by Siddharth Kara. Incredibly readable historical account of how 132 men, women and children were murdered aboard a slave ship. Reads like a courtroom thriller Doesn’t preach, educates in an easy to consume tale - my book of the year so far
October 27, 2025 at 7:14 AM
Film overload for a Monday night - left “one flew over the cuckoos nest” thinking maybe I was wrong and nurse Ratchett wasn’t so bad. Next “ballad of a small player”
October 20, 2025 at 7:47 PM
Good morning. Finished “The Long Shoe” by Bob Mortimer and heartily recommend (if you like Bob Mortimer). On a book subscription choice now - “The Ressurectionist” by A Rae Dunlap - medical grave robbing skullduggery in 1820’s Edinburgh - full of evocative period character so far
October 20, 2025 at 6:11 AM
Just finishing “Venetian Vespers” by John Banville - thoroughly enjoyed even though the narrator is thoroughly unlikeable (deliberately). Next Bob Mortimer and “The Long Shoe” which I’m expecting to be filled with likeable characters
October 13, 2025 at 6:14 AM
Good morning - moving forward a millennia or so this week with “Venetian Vespers” by John Banville. Lots of indignant / unaware Englishness so far and turn of the century atmosphere

I really enjoyed “One battle after another”, mainly because in my head I was reliving the 80’s and watching The A-Team
September 29, 2025 at 9:35 PM
Morning - just started “Sword of the war god” by Tim Hodkinson - it has started with battles and intrigue - so far so good
