On this day in ALX: 11/9/1949 - The Theodore Ficklin School (400 Second St) was dedicated. Costing over $500K, it was a modern marvel w/ a water fountain in every classroom! Named for a Confederate officer, it later became a crucial site in the ‘59 desegregation fight. Now, it's a townhouse complex.

On this day in Alexandria history. - Oct. 31, 1916: Alexandria’s bars closed down the day before state-wide prohibition went into effect in VA. ALX was expecting to lose an estimated $12,500 a year from liquor licenses, and the closure of Portner’s Brewery resulted in the loss of jobs and revenue.

On this day in Alexandria history - Oct.31, 1850: The Alexandria Council passed a resolution requiring trustees of the Alexandria Museum to hire a “suitable person for preservation and exhibition.” The museum was located in City Hall, which was destroyed by fire in 1871.
