the old 'tea room' by the pond at the Halsey estate in Irvington NY. a magical place when I was a little boy. I dream about it sometimes.

it reminds me of what renting VHS tapes was like in the early 90s. lots of little mid-budget films coming from smaller studios & untried directors that ended up developing cult followings thru rentals. films that threw stuff at the wall to see what stuck. #FilmSky📽️ #TheLawnmowerMan

there's a much darker film here, beneath it's suburban veneer. that's why I like it. much like early 90s videogames, this film is just... weird. a sweaty fever dream of disparate influences. it doesn't work in a conventional sense, but as sci-fi it sortof does. #FilmSky 📽️ #TheLawnmowerMan

the thread of abuse runs thru Jobe's fall after receiving the project 5 drugs. first the rape of Marnie in VR, destroying her mind. later when father McKeen confesses before Jobe kills him, he admits to 'cruel molestation' which we can assume Jobe was the target of. #FilmSky 📽️ #TheLawnmowerMan

#FilmSky 📽️ #TheLawnmowerMan -and they have this little moment together that's unexpected, touching & a little sad, given the unspoken reality of domestic abuse. yes, it's on the nose, but not in a bad way. it feels like something out of a 80s Wes Craven film.

#FilmSky 📽️ #TheLawnmowerMan I love this scene where Mrs. Parkett talks to Angelo, whose wife's just gone out after admonishing him for being drunk & asocial. Parkett's husband is loud & abusive, & she thanks Angelo for letting her son spend time w/him, who praises his qualities-

#FilmSky 📽️ #TheLawnmowerMan regardless of the film's shortcomings, Fahey's performance is not one of them. he's working without a net here & could not have done a better job.

ah wth, rewatching THE LAWNMOWER MAN (DC). 😋
you know? I love the unrefined, brutal aesthetic of these graphics. must have looked bonkers on a big screen. this was when 'cinema drawing inspiration from video games' actually meant something. #FilmSky 📽️

also, David Koresh's favorite film, which I would totally cite on a re-release. 😅

#FilmSky what's an arguably bad film you love (or like) anyway?
for me, the Lawnmower Man. it's such a time capsule of pre Y2K techbro vibes, and Brosnon & Fahey are earnest enough to make it (mostly) work. & I also love the rawness of the computer art. Job's final form is still kinda terrifying.

how to do creature fx: since the transformation is directly preceded by Ronnie's (& the viewer's) realization that Seth is really gone, this creature works- but you have to move quickly before disbelief sets in. Davis provides the cathartic emotional gut punch to sell the finale. #FilmSky #Horror

crazy he wasn't nominated for best actor that year. #FilmSky #Horror

remarkable for a film of the era to so effectively & ironically skewer male toxicity & romantic obsession. Stathis is genuinely repulsive, yet saves Ronnie's life... while Seth's endgame plan to fuse w/her & the baby is a nightmare version of becoming a 'whole person'. #FilmSky #Horror

I love the ways this film shorthands Seth as a humble, no-frills personality type. it makes him immediately relatable. he might be a genius eccentric and/or trust fund baby, but he's not full of himself (...yet). his main quality is childlike excitement about what he's doing. #FilmSky #Horror

how to backstory: a comment about lifelong issues w/motion sickness relating to vehicles. is that Seth's motivation? sure, why not? but no need to beat it to death. if they made this film today, this info would be conveyed thru some tedious childhood flashback/montage. less is more. #Filmsky #Horror
