i quit my job working on these things because i concluded i could not ethically continue, but the problem is that the space of criticism is dominated by people who believe that they are evil, useless, and cannot be improved, which ironically excludes almost every way in which they are harmful.

there's no way he voluntarily got an MRI for fun, it's pretty undignified and not very comfortable. two things Trump values above all else (yes I know we don't think he looks dignified but he thinks he does)

yeah they really had no idea it was going to end up killing them all any more than anyone else predicted the particular horrors of that war, they thought it was going to be finally their chance for glory in a proper European War, not like those colonial ones

like one post that's making a silly cartoon threat is liable to produce replies that aren't quite so silly, and now you have even more work to do. or you could just issue a time out. Not hard to see why moderators like the second option better a lot of the time

there are types of "difficult" speech that it's probably good and important to spend the required effort and time to be lenient with, but I don't think threats is really one of them

also it ends up selecting for a userbase who likes making and seeing not-quite-actionable threats, which also seems like a bad thing to lock yourself into, as a site moderator

the thing with being lenient about it is that you end up with people egging each other on to tiptoe over the line, and then either you let them do it or go nuclear on them, and now you have 1) everyone mad at you and 2) a culture of people having fun with going up to the line

surely the judge would immediately understand I am pure of heart and assign me attorneys' fees. I'm the good guy so I'm sure it would work out
