I think he was one of those stage comedians who didn’t come across as well on film. The early sound era swept in a bunch of those and swept them out again - Bobby Clark, Frank Faye, Willie Howard, Ed Wynn (saved by Disney 30 years later). Even Bert Lahr flopped at first.

The biggest danger is the Bing Crosby- David Bowie version because that’s the only one that’s almost ALMOST acceptable—but you have to be strong!
