Many spring makerspace workshops now up on scholarslab.org/events! Join us for *free* workshops e.g. letterpress, laser, lightup, & yarn valentines 💌; beading; sewing; & friendly intros to our 3D printers, lasercutter, CNC milling, soldering. Open to public; registration req'd bc of space limits
As usual, most of our plethora of free+public makerspace workshops won't be posted until students have been back long enough to design them! But we do have several options for letterpress printing & zinemaking learning scheduled already on 1/31, 2/9, and 4/17: +
Our spring events series is up! New events being added all the time (especially makerspace workshops), so check scholarslab.lib.virginia.edu/events for the latest. All events are free & open to the public (no UVA affilitation needed); some workshops have signup caps due to equipment limits.

Sent messages to Kaine and Warner via their websites re: the situation in Minneapolis and with ICE in general. There must be no further funding, the billions allocated for expansion must be clawed back, and the agency must be abolished. No reform is possible, and never has been.

New scam journal alert for #DigitalHumanities! Digital Humanities and Society Studies - not just predatory, but fully AI-generated with fake authors (or in at least one case, a recognizably stolen name). The publisher's been flagged before as being shady, but this journal is particularly egregious.

Teaching the first project management session for the Praxis Fellows this afternoon. As always, hoping I don't bore people, even though I'm usually surprised by how engaged everyone is when having these concepts explained.

Why are titles so difficult!?

If you were making a podcast about the Scholars' Lab, what would you call it? Because everything I'm coming up with is boring!

"Around the Lab"? "All About The Lab"? "Happening In The Lab"?

See?! Boring!

This book is so good, and so very needed. I can't wait for others to get their hands on it.

I'm so grateful I got to participate as a reviewer on some of these essays.
Got to flip through @rondagrizzle.bsky.social's reviewer's copy & this book looks great—smart honest digital humanities understanding "failure" as useful & often necessary part of iterative, creative, experimental research (failures & methods/goals, not ethics/people) +

Still in love with your research and interested in exploring what else you can do with the results of that work? We've got a design jam for that, too, and I'm telling all about it in this blog post!

At UVA? Interested in chatting with us about your ideas? Email us at [email protected]!
Our @rondagrizzle.bsky.social blogged about how we run design-jam-style DH consultations building on your existing work (following up on her previous post on design jams starting from just an exciting idea: scholarslab.lib.virginia.edu/blog/design-...):
Design Jams, Part 2: The Shorter Version
Last time we met, I promised to tell you all about the second kind of design jam, so here we go!

Sedation dentistry is no longer weird. Phone cameras are really good. The price of solar panels has dropped by tens of thousands. Southern white rhinos, giant pandas, Arabian oryx and Stellar sea lions are no longer endangered.

And, I can testify, modern cancer treatments are fucking amazing.
Please give me an unironic list of things that have gotten better over the last ten years because I’m spiraling.

I’ll start: you can buy an enormous TV from Costco for like $100 bucks now.
