I’ve also heard this is why comedy clubs often have seats at the side of the stage facing in. It means that audience members can *see* other people laughing. No idea how much of this is based on research versus stories comedians tell each other about different rooms.

I think it’s more a pop-psychology comedy club belief that cramming people together lowers inhibitions and makes people more likely to laugh. Same with them playing loud music before the show starts: the theory being it gets people comfortable raising their voices.
