This is like 50% true! LLMs do probabilistically produce text and don't have a strict knowledge base or way to tell when things are objectively true or false, but it is wrong to say that they are only correct when the correct thing is written down more often.
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
