In London we rarely speak to strangers on the tube but we will grimace and roll our eyes with collective exasperation if it’s too crowded or the train comes to a sudden stop.
We may curse the tourist who blocks an entrance but we will gladly offer travel advice to anyone who asks or looks confused.

Morrible is a fun comic opera panto dame Disney villain scenery-chewing role on stage, and that absolutely works. On stage. On film, it would have destroyed any sense of emotional verisimilitude.

The heartbreak and betrayal Elphaba experiences at the hands of her mentor I'd argue is even more important than her betrayal at the hands of the Wizard and is what pushes her over the edge. Glinda's desire to please her largely drives her. Michelle's take is what makes it work.

Also I would argue that the subtle, insidious manipulation she brought to the role is a KEY part of the success of the emotional truth of the narrative on screen when it comes to her effects on Elphaba and Glinda. They're more real because she's more real.
