Actually insane to find out the NSF GRFP is no longer accepting applications from 2nd year graduate students, with no warning... I applied as a senior in undergrad and decided to wait a year to build up skills and my CV before applying again. Guess not...

This is unfair to all who delayed applying as 1st-yr grad students in '24, or who withdrew due to missing letters (expecting eligibility this year), or who are 1st yr students now without sufficient time for a compelling application. Let me know if this is you. #NSFGRFP

NSF GRFP is out, but they’ve unexpectedly made 2nd year students ineligible.
It does seem like they have barred 2nd year graduate students from applying. This is devastating, I've been preparing my applications materials for MONTHS and now they all have to get binned...

This Sunday, we collected a close range dataset of multiple tornadoes near Arnett, OK in RaXPol. Despite scrambling to find a position, we captured the debris cloud, a debris ejection associated with intense RFD, and surface-layer vorticity worms in the inflow and RFD.

Be wary a quiet early May. Despite a seemingly slow start ensemble guidance, climo and sub seasonal Analogs paint a much more interesting picture mid to late Month. Especially for the High Plains.

The Rapid X-band Polarimetric Radar (RaXPol) from OU'S Advanced Radar Research Center (ARRC) beautifully captured the tornado near Matador, Texas last night 🌪️
At it's fastest rotation rate, RaXPol can complete a 360° spin in just 2 seconds and a full volume scan in as little as 20 seconds! #txwx

We’re excited to share that Dr. Joseph Trujillo-Falcón will join our regular faculty as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2025! He’ll continue his work on effective risk communication in weather and climate.

Make no mistake - this is absolutely end all climate-based research (not just climate change) in the US and officially surrender our scientific advantages in climate to countries like China for generations.
BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency.
Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

Sometimes I wonder how much more there really is left to learn about supercell environments and tornadoes. And sometimes you look at the radar in a sigtor environment and see this

I’m flattered people care about the NWC/SPC, but we’ve got to stop with the false reporting of the ROC lease as the NWC lease. The square footage and annual lease cost are nowhere near in the same ballpark. You guys give me a heart attack every time this happens.

The outpouring of posts, messages, and texts the last few hours is bittersweet. It’s evidence of the incredible community that is made up of everyone at NOAA and associated non-federal organizations, and the shockwaves that result when so many are abruptly cut off.

Tomorrow afternoon I'll be sharing how we're using numerical simulations to guide our observations of torndogenesis with mobile doppler lidar. Come see me at poster 860! #AMS2025
