If you do not have white rum, you can actually use vodka. vodka gives a clean, neutral spirit base, letting the wine and spices come through, while rum adds a bit of a sugarcane sweetness, but both work good for boosting flavor and giving you that warmth. Traditionally, Brandy is used.
