Occam’s answer — they’re sick with something else other than Covid.
Next possibility is that viral load has decreased with a new variant.
There have been some mutations in N recently but unlikely to significantly affect rapid antigen testing sensitivity. Clinical PCR testing unaffected AFAIK.
