Working on EV charging @ Stable.auto. Rivian bag-holder. Post mostly about tech, EVs, and climate. Posts occasionally serious but mostly defecatory.
There are days I regret spending time on social media. Not today though, definitely not today. #elon #trump

Kind of amazing how the duck curve seems to have almost completely unducked in just a couple of years thanks to batteries...

Initial reactions:
- It’s a phenomenal car. Hard to imagine why you’d prefer an MY given the current price point of the Ioniq
- Amazing how upscale the limited trim feels. Feels like a luxury car. Contrast with the MY and the SE/SEL trims is pretty wild. 🧵

I kept looking for the MY. Wild how far down the list it is…

And the duck curve looks so much less ducky. Largely displacing gas generation in CA. Batteries are arguably *the* most important piece of grid decarb now (though more transmission and easier interconnection are likely close 2nds).
Batteries start playing a huge role in some energy systems around the world.

Look at California - not long ago you wouldn’t even be able to see the contribution from batteries. Few expected batteries to ever be able to compete.

Today batteries can provide more than 20% of peak load in California.

Just discovered this new feature in our Span panel. Previously had to just fudge it by assuming charging in the middle of the day was mostly solar. So cool to be able to guarantee our Rivian is 100% fusion powered. #electricvehicles #evs

This is why you shouldn’t brew coffee before you’ve had your coffee.

When an industry is still nascent, it feels like you're slogging it out to scrape together a few cents. The same is true once it's mature. There's this brief glorious period in between that's a bit like walking down the street finding $100 bills. That's what EV charging feels like right now.

I don’t think I’ve ever been as disillusioned with our current institutions as the day I discovered that cups, when used for the purposes of brewing coffee, are not actually 8 fl oz.

I didn’t realize Moss Landing used Tesla packs. Of course it does 🤦#energysky

Landing back at LAX to a fully charged battery was real nice. We're still in the early days of destination charging, but man is it a dramatic step up in convenience when it's available. #EVs #ElectricVehicles

The bull case for Rivian is they’ve clearly built a sticky brand with a cult following and have the best designed cars in the industry right now.

The bear case is that cars are hard, they’re still a new company, and their competitors are outspending them 10:1 on R&D.

Very weird Bluesky experience right now where I'm getting a steady drip of new followers despite almost 0 engagement with my posts. I have no idea where people are coming from.

Almost complete inverse of my threads experience where I get a lot of engagement but almost no new followers from it...

What city has the worst airports and why is it New York?
December 2, 2024 at 8:54 PM
Bots. The answer is bots. Seems like the strategy is to impersonate well known accounts from the bad place and then message the people who follow back
👋 hi new (hopefully non-bot) friends.

Am I in a starter pack somewhere or did all of you find me randomly? Feels disproportionate to my level of activity but maybe that’s just BlueSky right now.

Charging speed is as much an efficiency story as a power one. Recent charging session in my Rivian, for most cars this would be excellent but for the R1 this was just enough to get me back to 50%. I suspect efficiency will make or break the R2s economics and success #electricvehicles #ev

If you're worried about traveling with your EV this Thanksgiving and getting stuck waiting to charge, you'll be fine. We pulled charge usage from last year and the times you'd expect crowding are the same ones you don't want to be on the road anyways.

My predictions for the platforms will net out based on ~30 seconds of thought:
- Twitter: 4chan with a South African birch veneer on top
- Threads: IG of text rewarding easy to consume content with associated bait thrown in
- Bsky: Aspiring Parisian cafe in the best and worst sense
