On Aug 29, 2007, Union Pacific rail workers lost control of a tanker car filled with chlorine at Arden, NV. The rail car sped about 20 miles through town at speeds up to 40 mph before the track started uphill. Amazingly, no damage and no spill. tinyurl.com/murs5fkw

The U.S. House approved a rescissions package to revoke $1.1 billion of funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for the next two fiscal years.

The package heads to the Senate, where Republicans hold a 53—47 majority, meaning federal funding for public media stations is in jeopardy.

Actor John Wayne died of cancer on Jun 11, 1979. It is speculated that radioactive fallout from nuclear tests in Nevada while Wayne was filming downwind of the Nevada Test Site in southwest Utah in 1955 contributed to his illness and subsequent death. bit.ly/192Davc
