Matthew 23:11 The greatest among you will be your servant.

It's not a bad question with which to end each day - "Who did I serve, how did I serve, today?"

Micah 3:11 Its rulers give judgment for a bribe, its priests teach for a price, its prophets give oracles for money; yet they lean upon the LORD and say, "Surely the LORD is with us! No harm shall come upon us."

God must be more to us than a slogan, a motto or a good luck charm.

Ephesians 3:10 So that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

James E. Brenneman is preaching at LABC today. His theme will be that the local church is now what the world will be ultimately.

Matthew 22:39 And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'

Last night's Ceasefire Night Walk at St. Benedict's was a reminder that working to stop the shooting is a very direct way of loving our neighbors.

Psalm 90:14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

What a difference it could make if one our first thoughts of the day was, "We humans are loved by God and there is nothing we can do about it!"

Isaiah 11:9 On Zion, God's sacred hill, there will be nothing harmful or evil. The land will be as full of knowledge of the LORD as the seas are full of water.

A prayer for the Middle East this morning as the prophet's vision of the peaceable kingdom seems an unreachable dream.

Exodus 33:14 The LORD said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."

If you are reading/seeing this, I trust that you will experience this ancient promise to Moses.

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley...

"We pray not for a perfect world, but for a better world." Rabbi Jackie Mates-Muchin as she began worship last night at Temple Sinai in Oakland.

Phillipians 4:2 I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.

Being of the same mind is deeper than simply getting along. It is moving toward shared goals while, at the same time, daring to differ.

Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole life long.

Follow can also be translated as pursue. It is a beautiful image to see ourselves as pursued by mercy and grace.

Psalm 25:7 And the LORD will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever.

Prayers today for the people of Israel and Palestine who long to see the shroud of death defeated.

Psalm 106:23 Therefore he said he would destroy them-- had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them.

Gratitude for those who, when we lose our way, stand up/stand in for us.

Psalm 80:14 Turn again, O God of hosts; look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine.

It is our prayer that the fatigued will not be forgotten, our hope that the fractured will not be forsaken.

Exodus 20:1-2 Then God spoke all these words: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

We must read the words, the commands, that follow as words of words of freedom, words of liberation.

(St. Catherine's Monastary, Mt. Sinai)

Phillipians 2:5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.

Let Jesus inspire us. A fitting hope for World Communion Sunday.

Psalm 25:7 Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness' sake, O LORD!

We cannot remake the past. Often, we need to repent of it. In some cases we can repair it.

Psalm 78:14 In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all night long with a fiery light.

Our faith is that when the journey is long, the Presence is clear.

20:16 "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

My mentor, The Reverend Dr. John H. Townsend said it like this - "We serve a god of magnificent differences and great surprises."

Psalm 145:4 One generation shall laud your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.

Gratitude is a practice that unites the generations, an act that shapes the ages.

Psalm 105:1 O give thanks to the LORD, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.

The above is best accomplished by an abundance of God-walk as opposed to an abundance of God-talk.

Matthew 18:22 Jesus said to him, "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times."

Essentially, Jesus was saying that forgiveness requires a very different kind of scoreboard.

Romans 14:10 Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

Sadly, the othering, the despising, leads to terrors and tragedies like this one.

Taking care of Oakand grandsons as OUSD is closed today. We played whiffle ball and then their assignment was to look up the great Roberto Clemente and write a paragraph about him. #RobertoClementeDay
