Bethesda either needed to come up with a compelling reason there are no Aliens ala Dead Space or add some weird aliens that we have to struggle to properly interact with. First contact! That’s a huge part of science fiction—nowhere to be seen in Starfield.

This is a great point. There’s not a lot of weird science going on that you can stumble across. It’s there but it’s very minimal.
Also, intelligent aliens. Doesn’t matter if they are humanoid and not that weird (although they should not be humanoid and definitely should be weird asf).

I walk around saying this aloud all the time to myself now; not great, don’t like to feel it. The existential dread that has always been there at the edges is at a fucking 11 right now and most of the people I interact with are going about their business as usual.

It’s been said many times but they really do openly prefer fascism to mild social democracy, especially if that messaging comes from non-white “agitators”. They cannot conceive of a world where the political spectrum doesn’t hew entirely towards reactionary neoliberalism.

It’s the same thing reactionary conservatives in America do to the “left” in their minds (to a lesser degree obviously). They think that one day, they will be treated the way they wish everyone that isn’t white be treated and they have a bone deep, unconscious certainty they deserve it.
