I imagine it as Hojo/Vincent/Lucrecia having a thing going on in Nibelheim until Vincent found out about the Sephiroth stuff & he tried to put a stop to it. And then Vincent's failure & self-loathing is what keeps him with Hojo, even after Lucrecia has left.
